How to have an AHA Moment

January 26, 2008

Sharon Begley (Newsweek.com) wrote an amazing article on how the brain works when people have their little epiphanies….aha moments….revelations…whatever you want to call it.

What I found most interesting from her “lab notes” is that the ones who solved problems quicker, with less strain, are the ones who relax mentally and don’t get all anxious.  I mean, isn’t it true that we all have had, at one time or another, test anxiety?  Or performance anxiety of some sort where our minds just go blank?

It really makes a lot of sense!

Begley concludes:

“So if you’re stuck on a problem that requires creativity, the first thing to do is relax, mentally. Stop pursuing the same old dead ends. Let your thoughts wander. Let your attention flit between seemingly irrelevant memories and thoughts. That’s the best way to let disparate pieces of the puzzle come together into your own eureka moment.”

So, relax.  Your AHA moment is on it’s way.

Revise

Revamp, Review, Re-try

January 21, 2008

KelleyIt seems I am better at writing to you than video blogging. :)

Let’s face it…I’ve slacked off. Not because I haven’t recorded the vlogs, but because there simply isn’t enough time in the day to be a mom, entrepreneur, writer, and friend and upload them in the meantime.

So, I’m revamping my over-zealous plans for this site as I do most goals I make. I always bite off more than I can chew. But maybe that’s my personality. Or flaw. Maybe I believed Les Brown’s quote too much: “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”

I don’t want to stop reaching just a bit farther, stretching my capabilities, mining my strengths, and….um….eventually facing my reality. I know that when there is change that I want in my life, I have to adjust.

So why can’t I know that going into the resolution making business anyway?

I don’t want to lose steam from failing so much. I want to keep plugging on when it really doesn’t seem like I’m making much headway. It’s not about being ambitious or driven, it’s about trying to be better than I was the day before – the year before.

The thing is, I can always revise. I forget that. Do you?

If we fear failure or perfection – that we might not get it right, or the way we want it – we’ll never set any goals higher than things we can reach without really trying. And that’s not stretching oneself, that’s succumbing to the pain of the stretch while we’re in it.

I don’t advocate setting unrealistic goals. That’s just setting yourself up to beat yourself up. But I do think we should look at what is truly important to us, of what we want to get out of life, and go for it! If we don’t we’ll still keep waiting for someone to hand us something that might never come, or even worse, just sigh and say something like, “oh well, maybe it’s just not meant to be.” (more on that later)

Maybe we’ll tell ourselves that we’re OK just where we are. And maybe we are….and maybe deep down we’re not. I think I’m afraid of saying that because it looks like I’m not thankful for what I’ve been given.

Pshaw! (I’ve always wanted to write that word. LOL)

It’s because of what I’ve been given, what I’m thankful for, that pushes me on.

I believe we are all born with innate talents - those God-given abilities that are blessings as well as curses. I feel if we are truly thankful….grateful…we put those to use. And sometimes that is hard. Why can’t we just sit on them…think about them….protect them….

Perhaps it ends up that we ignore them because at times the risk is too great. And sometimes, we just get sidetracked. But let’s not let that stop us!

So, if you have fallen short of achieving your resolutions for this year, don’t worry. You are soooooo not alone.

So maybe we do this together?

Let’s dive right back in, reviewing what works and what doesn’t and move on. Can you forgive yourself for not meeting your goals? I know. That’s the tough part. But we have to try.

Forgive yourself. Revise your plans. Keep trying.

No matter where you are in your new year, remember nothing is set in stone and we can change where we are right now. It all begins with a change of heart and mindset.

And we can do that!

Forgiveness for Yourself

January 21, 2008

My wish for you is for you to find forgiveness for yourself.

For once, or the millionth time, be kind to yourself – be compassionate – and really admit where you failed or fell short, missed the mark, or messed up.

Admit it, accept it, forgive yourself, and promise to try to do better.

Find forgiveness somewhere in your heart for all of the things you just plain ol forgot, messed up, or did way in the past.

Often, when you practice forgiveness of yourself, you’ll be able to overcome whatever it is that’s holding you back from being the person you were meant to become.

Because…you were meant to be great.

All my love to you,

Kelley

To Be: Forgiving of my own Failures

January 21, 2008

It’s hard to overlook your own mistakes. The things we set out to do and fall short of, the plans we make, the people we let down.

Forgiving others is hard; forgiving yourself is even harder.

Today, try to be a friend to yourself. What would you say to a friend who had really messed up. Really.

Would you kick them while they’re down? Would you call them names? Would you remind them constantly of what they did and how bad they messed up?

Of course you wouldn’t. So don’t do that to yourself.

Find forgiveness somewhere in your heart for all of the things you just plain ol forgot, messed up, or did way in the past. Often, when you practice forgiveness of yourself, you’ll be able to overcome whatever it is that’s holding you back from being the person you were meant to become.

Coming Up: February

January 21, 2008

Valentine’s Day is coming up. So in celebration of it, I’ll be focusing the site on love baby. The good, the bad, and everything in between. The romantic, the parental, the spiritual, and even giving a little love back to yourself.

Of course, I’ll cover decorating for Valentine’s Day and give you plenty of sites to visit, but, for the most part, I want you to find at least 29 days of how you can make each and every day a little bit of Valentine’s Day.

So, stay tuned. Tell your friends, and as always, much love to you.

To Do: Review Your Resolutions

January 21, 2008

Here we are, the third week into a brand-spanking new year. It’s time to review your resolutions.

See what’s working and what is not. Change up the order, revise them, add or take away some. There is no right or wrong. Just review them and keep moving!

Don’t Have Time To Blog? Love to text? Twitter.

January 21, 2008

Micro-blog with Twitter from your cell phone.

Yes, if you can text from your mobile phone, you can blog and let everyone know what’s going on with you or fill your peeps in on funny things you overhear or see as you move about your day.

Twitter is a free widget you can place on your social networking site (like MySpace, Facebook, etc.) or your blog.  It’s sort of I guess, mobile blogging.  Like, when my nephew saw a man walking in Times Square with a cat on his head, he could’ve texted ”just passed a man with a cat on his head that cursed us.”

I would have LOVED it!

You sign up at the Twitter site and you can immediately type in your updates from your home page, or activate your cell phone number and Twitter from it.  There is even a third option of sending your updates via your instant messenger through LiveJournal, GTalk, and Jabber

(I’m thinking this would be a great thing for pregnant or women expecting. That way, the hubby could text in the updates and everyone that subscribes can get their updates on the go on their cell phones.)

I’m adding my twitter widget to this site (as well as my MySpace page) by simply cutting and pasting the code they provide.  Easy peasy.

Now, I have to warn you. I don’t text a lot, so the updates will be random. But sometimes, I see things I just have to share.

And some things, I’m sure you might wish I didn’t-

…like when I discovered I went to a school Christmas party, talked to all the parents in the room, and the teacher, and discovered (only after getting into the car and checking my makeup) that I had a stray blush brush hair that had stuck to my chin thus making me looking like I had a big black wirey chin hair.

Niiiiiiice.

So have fun with it. You can sign up here.

And if you want to follow my text messages through Twitter, click here.

Dog Talk

January 21, 2008

A guy is driving around the back woods of Tennessee and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house:”Talking Dog For Sale.”

He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard. The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador Retriever sitting there.

“You talk?” he asks.
“Yep,” the Lab replies.

After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog speak,he says, “So, what’s your story?”

The Lab looks up and says, “Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told them. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running.”

But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some under cover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in.”

I uncovered some incredible stuff and was awarded a bunch of medals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.”

The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

“Ten dollars,” the guy says.
“Ten dollars?! This dog is amazing! Why on earth are youselling him so cheap?”
“Because he’s a liar. He never did any of that stuff.”
