Growing up as a child of a single working mother, there were times I went to bed with an empty and aching tummy and a worried mind. My sisters and I never complained about how little we had; we knew we had no choice. But now, as I’m older, I do have a choice to make sure the fight against child hunger never stops. The fear of having nothing in my pantry may have subsided for me, but I know for many that fear still lurks behind bare cupboards.
I choose to make a difference today and every day by being committed to the fight against hunger. I know the toll hunger takes on minds, hearts, and families. The pain is residual but this pain can be cured and must stop. It’s the little things we can do that will have a long term effect on our country today, tomorrow, and for the future of this great nation.
And, the thing I’ve been reminded of many times by my loving mother that I hope to pass down to my child, “Charity begins in your own backyard.” That’s why I support Feeding America. That’s why I fight. That’s what I believe.
